The Herd
The hedgehogs at Colorful Quills are also our pets. The boys have their own bachelor pads complete with an igloo, for sleeping and privacy, a wheel, to keep in shape for the ladies, and toys. Each bachelor pad has room to accomodate and impress the visiting females.
When the ladies are raising a litter, they have their own quiet, private nursery with everything they need for their growing families. When the ladies are inbetween litters they hang out together in larger versions of the bachelor pads with multiple igloos. Here the ladies compare hoglet raising techniques, play a few games, and discuss the gentlemen. We handle the hedgies regularly except when they are on maturnity leave. The hoglets are handled as soon as the mother allows, usually at 2 to 3 weeks of age. The hedgehogs are fed premium, high quality cat and kitten food. They also receive mealworms, and freeze dried crickets as treats. Occasionally they are also offered veggies and cooked meats. During the warmer months the hedgies enjoy visits to the garden or park where they enjoy the outdoors. |
