Hedgehogs are pregnant from 5 to 7 weeks, and there is no way to know for sure if a female is pregnant until she does or does not have a litter by the end of 8 weeks. Litter size can vary from 1 to 6 hoglets, though 3 to 4 is average. Spring, summer, and early fall are usually the best months for successful litters. Sometimes I have an idea what color a litter may produce, but mother nature can still surprise me. Also individual color cannot be determined until the hoglet is between 2 and 3 weeks old. Waiting for each new litter to arrive is exciting and nerve wracking. We breed our females in groups so if there are any problems hopefully there will be other mothers available to foster babies. Please be patient while we wait to see what arrives!
During the late fall and winter the litter success rates drop dramatically. Most animals do not have offspring during this time, and hedgehogs are no exception. We continue to breed during these months on the odd chance that one will take, but late fall/winter litters are not common.

I begin contacting the waiting list when the hoglets are around 2 to 3 weeks old.
At that time I can start to handle the litter, get an official count, tell gender, and get a better idea of color.
