Personality Profiles

Explorer/Adventurer

Picture
The adventurer is one of the most outgoing, inquisitive types of hedgehog.  They are usually on the move and into everything.  Don’t expect this hog to sit still much.  This type of hedgehog is the most likely hog to find an escape route, and needs a little more supervision when outdoors, or in a playpen.  The adventurer is a busy hedgehog that enjoys physical exercise, and is quite entertaining to watch.  Adventurers are usually a favorite with active, older children.

Cuddle-Bug

Picture
The cuddle-bug lives up to his or her name.  This hedgehog is not as active as the adventurer, especially when being handled or in the middle of the day.  Cuddle bugs are a bit mellower, and will often chill with their owner on their lap while watching TV, or while working on the computer.  Cuddle bugs might even take a nap while hanging out in a lap or in a playpen during the day.  Many cuddle-bugs have a bit of a tendency to put on weight if not motivated to exercise, and their diet is not monitored.

Each hedgehog has its own individual, unique personality, but most of them fall into one of the main personality “types” listed here.

Adventurer/Explorer

The adventurer is one of the most outgoing, inquisitive types of hedgehog.  They are usually on the move and into everything.  Don’t expect this hog to sit still much.  This type of hedgehog is the most likely hog to find an escape route, and needs a little more supervision when outdoors, or in a playpen.  The adventurer is a busy hedgehog that enjoys physical exercise, and is quite entertaining to watch.  Adventurers are usually a favorite with active, older children.

Cuddle-Bug

The cuddle-bug lives up to his or her name.  This hedgehog is not as active as the adventurer, especially when being handled or in the middle of the day.  Cuddle bugs are a bit mellower, and will often chill with their owner on their lap while watching TV, or while working on the computer.  Cuddle bugs might even take a nap while hanging out in a lap or in a playpen during the day.  Many cuddle-bugs have a bit of a tendency to put on weight if not motivated to exercise, and their diet is not monitored.

Bashful Buddy

This type of hedgehog is a bit shier, but still a wonderful, loving pet.  This hedgehog has a quiet, gentle presence, and their bashful charm is endearing.    They often hide their face in your hand, but relax their quills and allow petting and belly rubs.  This hedgie will often pick a favorite trusted person to relax around, but takes a bit more time to trust a new person.  Though reserved this hedgehog is still sweet and loving.  This is usually a great pet for a quiet household, or gentle person, but not always the best choice for a noisy, busy family.

Not a Morning Hog

Everyone knows someone that takes a bit more time to wake-up in the morning.  Maybe you are that person.  Don’t expect much from the non-morning person until after a first cup of coffee.  This hog needs a bit more time and coaxing to wake up during the day, and will quickly go back to sleep if let alone.  Often times this hog will need a bit of convincing to wake-up and join the party.  Once awake though this hog is a great interactive pet.  This is a “not before my first cup of coffee” personality. This hog is often much more interactive, and alert at night.  This hog is often a favorite for the night owls.

Recluse

This last hedgie is extremely shy.  They roll into a tight ball, pop and hiss even after a bit of extended, gentle coaxing to relax.  This hedgehog is usually poorly socialized, or has had some sort of bad experience that caused fear.  This personality is often found in rescues.  With time and patience some of these hedgehogs still become wonderful pets.
